Craters of the Moon is considered the best spot for mounting biking, with 50 kilometres of tracks overlooking stunning views of Lake Taupo and the Waikato River.

Transport in Taupo is affordable, friendly and modern. The local bus service in the area is Taupo Connector, which goes through north, west and central Taupo. Cycling is also a popular way of getting around. There are many great walking and cycling tracks throughout the district for locals and visitors to enjoy.

For visitors flying into New Zealand through Auckland, car rentals are available at the airport from a number of local and international providers. The drive from Auckland to Taupo takes about three and a half hours, heading south on State Highway 1. For visitors flying into Taupo Airport, the terminal is located just eight kilometres south of the town centre. Having a car is the best way to travel around the region, as it gives you the freedom to explore the area at your own pace and allows you to see as many attractions as possible.
